(The short version of the story is that the hockey community considered this important given what was happening over on the previous pickup hockey server.) I am using Vanilla-2.9pl6. The server has been set to solicit players via the metaservers. The .metaservers file looks like (pretty much straight out of metaservers-HowTo): metaserver.us.netrek.org 3521 60 120 puck.psychosis.net H 2592 2593 open metaserver2.us.netrek.org 3521 60 120 puck.psychosis.net H 2592 2593 open metaserver.eu.netrek.org 3521 60 120 puck.psychosis.net H 2592 2593 open The problem: When a player logs into the server, the typical result is for two of the three metaservers to indicate that the server is "flooding" the metaserver, as in: -h puck.psychosis.net -p 2592 0 * Flooding R H (Generally, one of metaserver.us or metaserver2.us end up listing the server with players, while the other one and metaserver.eu end up with "* Flooding". Which of the two us metaservers ends up flooding appears to be random.) Whatever it is that I am doing to flood the metaservers (and I assume that this is at least slightly antisocial behaviour) I would like to stop doing it. I would appreciate any and all suggestions regarding how to get my server to behave normally on the metaservers. Thank you for your time. -- / Ken. The last released tarball has a race condition in the flooding determination. Both sides set the minimum time elapsed to the same value. That depends on consistent packet travel time across the net. If the first packet in a 2 packet sequence takes 500ms (arbitrary number) to get to the metaserver the flooding code will kick in if the second packet's travel time is anything less than 500ms. The CVS repository has that fixed for quite some time now. --Carlos V. From unbelver at brain.jpl.nasa.gov Thu Dec 28 12:43:33 2000 From: unbelver at brain.jpl.nasa.gov (Carlos Y. And if, how do I fix it so it meets your demands. It has to not send solicitations too fast. If you were starting and stopping the server a few times a minute, this might happen. Looking at the listing now, the problem does not seem to be present. If you have modified the update rate check code in ntserv/solicit.c to increase it beyond the coded limit, then the flooding trigger is likely to go off. If you have not modified this code, then it may have been due to your starts and stops of the server. If you can get it to go into flooding state without starting and stopping the server, we wan't to know what to fix in the server code. -- James Cameron mailto:quozl@us.netrek.org http://quozl.netrek.org/ From mathew at eagle.y.se Mon Dec 25 10:36:26 2000 From: mathew at eagle.y.se (Mattias Nordlund) Date: Wed Jan 12 00:53:27 2005 Subject: [META] lando.eagle.y.se In-Reply-To: <20001224131613.A12570@us.netrek.org> Message-ID: On Sun, 24 Dec 2000, James Cameron wrote: > On Fri, Dec 22, 2000 at 05:03:00PM +0100, Mattias Nordlund wrote: > > When I looked at the metserver it said that this server was flooding, how > > come? One other thing, what is needed to run a netrek server for public use? lando.eagle.y.se is a SPARCstation 4, 110 MHz MicroSPARC, 96 MB ram and 2 mbit connection, Is this enough or will it be slow/lagged with a lot of people? I have played a game on it with ~10 players, and some complained a bit about lag, but they were mostly from the US and the server is located in sweden, with Swedish and European players as it's target.
