Yes, they did.  The unix strategy game empire is another client-server
real-time internet game (though not graphical) that goes wayyyy back.  I
can't seem to find a history file right now, but it goes back at least into
the 80's.

empire has never used encryption;  individualized smart clients are part of
the game.  I used to write my own tools to play.
