The damage is coded into the eight bits of the second field with two extra bits placed in the spare bits of the first field. > The only thing that could cause that to be non-zero is an ATT. So you are saying that the short packets format supports ATT class. That's good, isn't it? It also provides for expansion in case of very strong phasers. The same person (Heiko) did the client and the server at the same time, so you should look at a short packet modified client. -- James Cameron mailto:quozl@us.netrek.org http://quozl.netrek.org/ From vanilla-devel at us.netrek.org Wed Jun 28 18:19:49 2000 From: vanilla-devel at us.netrek.org (Vanilla CVS Development) Date: Wed Jan 12 00:51:11 2005 Subject: [Vanilla Devel] CVS update: Vanilla/ntserv Message-ID: <200006282319.e5SNJnU06284@swashbuckler.fortress.real-time.com> Date: Wednesday June 28, 2000 @ 18:19 Author: cameron Update of /home/netrek/cvsroot/Vanilla/ntserv In directory swashbuckler.fortress.real-time.com:/var/tmp/cvs-serv6281 Modified Files: salt.h Log Message: undo breakage **************************************** Index: Vanilla/ntserv/salt.h diff -u Vanilla/ntserv/salt.h:1.2 Vanilla/ntserv/salt.h:1.3 --- Vanilla/ntserv/salt.h:1.2 Fri Jun 23 04:12:58 2000 +++ Vanilla/ntserv/salt.h Wed Jun 28 18:19:49 2000 @@ -1,7 +1,7 @@ #ifndef SALT_H #define SALT_H -typedef char *saltbuf; +typedef char saltbuf[3]; char* salt(const char*, saltbuf); From vanilla-devel at us.netrek.org Wed Jun 28 19:11:35 2000 From: vanilla-devel at us.netrek.org (Vanilla CVS Development) Date: Wed Jan 12 00:51:11 2005 Subject: [Vanilla Devel] CVS update: web Message-ID: <200006290011.e5T0BZ206319@swashbuckler.fortress.real-time.com> Date: Wednesday June 28, 2000 @ 19:11 Author: cameron Update of /home/netrek/cvsroot/web In directory swashbuckler.fortress.real-time.com:/var/tmp/cvs-serv6316 Modified Files: index.html Log Message: 2.9pl6 re-release **************************************** Index: web/index.html diff -u web/index.html:1.20 web/index.html:1.21 --- web/index.html:1.20 Tue Jun 27 20:36:37 2000 +++ web/index.html Wed Jun 28 19:11:34 2000 @@ -79,14 +79,18 @@

I think some of your reasoning for wanting to make these changes may have some merit. But I think that your assumption that LPS should be more "interesting" is incorrect. LPS only happens in the most unbalanced (and IMO boring) games. Netrek is far more interesting when you have two teams that are relatively equal in strength. That isn't to say that we should enforce equality among teams, but I don't think changing the LPS mechanics will do anything to help the game attract a larger player base or to improve the game's mechanics. -- Dave Ahn | ahn@vec.wfubmc.edu | Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. I totally agree. The problem comes when you try to do something that gets rid of LPS that makes it impossible to recover. The target idea here is something that makes it so a medium-clue team at LPS against a high-clue team goes down faster - eliminating some of the tedium, while still allowing a possibility for recovery if a couple high- clue players join the LPS team. I think I managed to cover that necessity fairly well, but I am worried that it adds too much bookkeeping to every player's schedule. If there are simpler ideas out there that preserve a Sun Tzu-like system (fairness, recoverability, makes tactical sense, fits the overall feel of the game) I'd love to hear them. rOn From jeffno at ccs.neu.edu Tue Jun 27 14:03:11 2000 From: jeffno at ccs.neu.edu (Jeffrey Nowakowski) Date: Wed Jan 12 00:51:56 2005 Subject: [Vanilla List] Re: [VANILLA-LIST:3228] ping In-Reply-To: from "ronbarry@es.com" at Jun 26, 2000 02:29:15 PM Message-ID: <200006271903.e5RJ3B902757@denali.ccs.neu.edu> ronbarry@es.com wrote: > > The way I see it, LPS is the bane of the game. I see nothing wrong with timercide. It is simple and effective. Changing the mechanics with complicated "shuttle" schemes or the like isn't a good idea. -Jeff From frankn at cs.vu.nl Tue Jun 27 14:26:07 2000 From: frankn at cs.vu.nl (Frank Niessink) Date: Wed Jan 12 00:51:56 2005 Subject: [Vanilla List] metaserver.eu.netrek.org Message-ID: <20000627212607.A19892@flits.cs.vu.nl> Hi guys, As some of you might know, next to the two Us metaservers, a third metaserver has been running for more than 4.5 years at metaserver.eu.netrek.org. Now the time has come to bring that metaserver down. Several reasons: - There are hardly any Europeans that play Netrek any more. - There are no European pickup servers with regular T-mode. - The link with the US is quite good, so latency to the US metaservers is acceptable. - Consequently, I don't want to put time in a service that is not really of use (any more). So, metaserver.eu.netrek.org is down as of last night. If you make genocide easier, it will only further encourage players to clue stack. > - eliminating some of the tedium, There are easier ways to accomplish this. You could reinstate timercide. Or reset the game if a team is fewer than X planets. Or change the res location to be more distant from the homeworld. However, I think LPS is part of the game. If people insist on clue-stacking on a team to geno a bunch of clueless twinks, then they deserve the boredom of it all. If they want a fun and challenging game, they can get it without any help from code changes: join the weaker team. -- Dave Ahn | ahn@vec.wfubmc.edu | Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced.
