We did an anlsysis in a Digital engineering lab back in 1995 or so. The bandwidth peaked at 0.1% of 10Mb/S unswitched ethernet, for a 14 player game with two starbases. We felt this was so insignificant, we didn't go any further. It is latency which is critical. What sort of uplink? Yes, UDP portswap would help. The metaserver communication is on the usual metaserver port, 3521, on UDP and TCP.
