I found a problem with Hadley's bot that makes it really bad a dodging torps. It turns out its caused by a incompatability with the server. I'd like to know when that incompatability appeared and why, but there is no history to look at. Message-ID: <20051222013647.GA13892@us.netrek.org> http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-scrnsave/ ... this article describes how to embed a Linux application as a screen saver on Windows. Some of this work could help Netrek packaging, if there are any developers who are Windows and Linux focused and willing to take it on. An ISO could provide a practice server, and a client, yet be usable within Windows. We already have a bootable CD configuration used on http://computercamp.org.au/, but there's naturally some resistance to a complete operating system shift. -- James Cameron mailto:quozl@us.netrek.org http://quozl.netrek.org/ -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... G'day James, Neat. Would it be easier to use an existing Windows client to make the Windows screensaver? Is the assumption that people will download the screensaver because it looks cool and then this will lead to people trying out netrek? I think if the Vanilla server was ported to Windows this could lead to many new public servers and may see resurgence of Paradise netrek as well as Windows client development in general. Seems to major work has been done on a Linux client in years, aside from revisions to existing Linux clients. Anyone interesting in making a Next Generation Linux client? The answer would depend on the skills of the person doing it. I'm sure I could not do it without many days of research in a field I've been avoiding for years. > Is the assumption that people will download the screensaver because it > looks cool and then this will lead to people trying out netrek? I don't know. I don't understand why screensaver was even mentioned, but I presume it is because it is easier to package that way. Seems silly. You'd have to ask the author of the article, or someone who knows more than I do about it. > I think if the Vanilla server was ported to Windows this could lead to > many new public servers and may see resurgence of Paradise netrek as > well as Windows client development in general. Porting to Windows is a different task. Running it in emulation inside a screensaver that runs QEMU to run the Linux kernel ... is a far simpler task, based on the techniques described by that article. > Seems to major work has been done on a Linux client in years, aside > from revisions to existing Linux clients. Anyone interesting in making > a Next Generation Linux client? There are people working on a next generation client. Saw someone on #netrek just the other day give a screen shot. It had a 3D feel to it by nature of an isometric view. -- James Cameron mailto:quozl@us.netrek.org http://quozl.netrek.org/ From netrek at gmail.com Fri Dec 23 01:52:36 2005 From: netrek at gmail.com (Zach) Date: Fri Dec 23 01:53:54 2005 Subject: [netrek-dev] Netrek as a Screensaver on Windows?
