The answer would depend on the skills of the person doing it. I'm sure I could not do it without many days of research in a field I've been avoiding for years. > Is the assumption that people will download the screensaver because it > looks cool and then this will lead to people trying out netrek? I don't know. I don't understand why screensaver was even mentioned, but I presume it is because it is easier to package that way. Seems silly. You'd have to ask the author of the article, or someone who knows more than I do about it. > I think if the Vanilla server was ported to Windows this could lead to > many new public servers and may see resurgence of Paradise netrek as > well as Windows client development in general. Porting to Windows is a different task. Running it in emulation inside a screensaver that runs QEMU to run the Linux kernel ... is a far simpler task, based on the techniques described by that article. > Seems to major work has been done on a Linux client in years, aside > from revisions to existing Linux clients. Anyone interesting in making > a Next Generation Linux client? There are people working on a next generation client. Saw someone on #netrek just the other day give a screen shot. It had a 3D feel to it by nature of an isometric view. -- James Cameron mailto:quozl at us.netrek.org http://quozl.netrek.org/
