in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file, you should see a reference to either /dev/mouse (which is a link to ...) or /dev/psaux. This assumes you have a PS/2 mouse, which nearly all recent modern computers have. If you are using XFree86 3.3.6 instead of XFree86 4.0.1, then the file is /etc/XF86Config.
