We went from text-terminals running off an HP system in the 80's, to text-terminals running off an x86 SCO system, to X-terminals running off of x86 UnixWare and Sparc Solaris boxes. We are down to one UnixWare box (with a backup mirror) and one Solaris box (with a backup mirror). We will be decommissioning the UnixWare box and moving all apps from the Solaris box (excepting Autocad) to Linux by the end of November. We have had test Linux servers running for over a year. We have 1 Windows machine that is accessible to anyone on their X-terminal via VNC, but it is used solely for translating wierd format windows files that are sent to us via e-mail and to run a structural analysis program that is unavailable on non-legacy computers (grin). Oh, our business is the same size as yours - about 100 employees. 40 X-terminals, 40 printers/plotters/label printers. Linux is on a par with UnixWare for stability - actually the OS seems slightly better, and since I can choose from a wide range of hardware I feel I can make Linux a lot more stable than UnixWare. Note that I currently expect uptimes of 6 months with UnixWare without any incidents - I am guessing Linux will approach my Solaris box, which is typically 12 months without incidents - most incidents in the life of my Solaris box have been related to external events outside the box (like, gee I wonder what this power cord is connected to...). So, in answer to your question - yes, I am seriously going to replace Unix with Linux.
