The Durons don't do all that badly, but they are slightly slower. There is a very complete benchmarking report on Tom's Hardware that compares the Duron, Athlon, and TBird. After reading it and seeing the minimal price difference between families I went with the T-Bird (800Mhz Athlon for $190).
