Have you used DocBook much? It's a fairly intuitive SGML/XML DTD geared towards technical documents. A lot of the major open source projects are using it (q.v., GNOME, KDE, and now Wine). I imagine it'll be around for quite some time. It's rapidly becoming an informal standard. Stylesheets exist (http://nwalsh.com/) to convert it to HTML, PDF, PostScript, and probably others.
