Does the laptop support suspend-to-disk?  That's what I use on mine and it
works pretty well.  (The graphics gard gets confused if I suspend in X
though, so I have to remember to flip over to a console first.  No problems
other than that, though.)  And you're not likely to find anything that boots
faster than restarting from a suspend.
