OK. I don't have the correct kernel module. Syslog looks like this:

Apr 26 09:08:36 merlin cardmgr[180]: executing: 'modprobe -r serial_cs'
Apr 26 09:09:04 merlin cardmgr[180]: initializing socket 0
Apr 26 09:09:04 merlin cardmgr[180]: socket 0: ATA/IDE Fixed Disk
Apr 26 09:09:04 merlin cardmgr[180]: executing: 'modprobe ide_cs'
Apr 26 09:09:04 merlin cardmgr[180]: + modprobe: Can't locate module
ide_cs
Apr 26 09:09:04 merlin cardmgr[180]: modprobe exited with status 255
Apr 26 09:09:04 merlin cardmgr[180]: module
/lib/modules/2.4.3/pcmcia/ide_cs.o not available
Apr 26 09:09:06 merlin cardmgr[180]: get dev info on socket 0 failed:
Resource temporarily unavailable

I am using the 2.4.3 kernel built using make-kpkg under debian. I guess
the question is what is the config setting that builds the ide_cs
module?

(I think the card would show up as hdc as I don't believe my laptop has
2 IDE channels...just my guess anyway.)

Thanks,

Dave
