Two thoughts:  You could have your screen dpi set really damn low (your
monitor could be incorrectly reporting it's size through the DCC
communication between the video card and monitor).  You'd have to try
something like putting `exec X -dpi 100' into your ~/.xserverrc file.

Or, the first available fixed-width font is a dot-matrix font..  You
might want to try changing the order of font directories in your
XF86Config file or your font servers config file (/etc/X11/fs/config, if
I remember right).
