You probably need to muck with xauth.  I'm not an expert on it, though
this has usually worked for me:  As the user who `owns' the X session, do
`xauth list' and look for the cookie being used by your current session
(should look like <hostname>:<display> and/or <hostname>/unix:<display>). 
Then, su or otherwise log in as root or any other user.  Type in `xauth
add ' and then cut-n-paste the appropriate cookie lines (the whole line,
not just the cookie or anything).
