I'm not an expert on it, though this has usually worked for me: As the user who `owns' the X session, do `xauth list' and look for the cookie being used by your current session (should look like <hostname>:<display> and/or <hostname>/unix:<display>). Then, su or otherwise log in as root or any other user.
