I think the 'LM' in the 'LMHOSTS' stands for 'LAN Manager'. If that is so, it is probably a place to put NetBIOS host info, but I do not remember the format/use/whatever (maybe a place DOS clients put off-segment WINS server info?). Using 'HOSTS' for TCP/IP host info is probably for the best (on win 9x/me/nt/2k).
