Keep in mind that the 42-bit color figure is referring to a total depth of
42 bits per *pixel*, while the 8 bit color you're seeing is per *channel*
(I.E., 24-bits per pixel). You're not missing a huge amount with 24bpp
(8bpc), unless you are doing drastic histographic value changes; in 'dat
case, the higher bit depth will keep your images from becoming posterized.
You'll still need to downgrade to 24bpp or 8bpp to save in most any
"standard" format.
