Looks like the screen people are still one step ahead of you. :)

-D (-r)       Detach and logout remote (and reattach here).
-D -RR        Do whatever is needed to get a screen session.

I tried -D -R, and it works like I think you want: if there's another
session, it detaches it, then reattaches where you are. If there isn't
another session, it starts one.

I haven't tried -D -RR. I'm a bit afraid of that "whatever is needed"
line...

BTW, putting "screen -R" in my .bash_login works fine. No fork bombs or
melted machines.
