bad nic?  check output of 'ifconfig' and look for any errors or
retransmits.

bad hub or switch on the network somewhere?  I had a similar problem
running NFS through a cheap linksys switch in the past.  the switch
appeared to freeze under high nfs traffic.  removing it solved the
problem.
