try gentoo, though it takes longer to install it is excelent with unusual 
hardware that needs software to be recompiled for support.

if you are using alsa then it is muted by default
try: alsamixer or alsamixer-gui
and unmute and crank up the volume on both Master and PCM
the alsa init scripts _should_ save the volume as it was at shutdown and 
reload them at bootup.

getting wireless to work is usually not a big problem IF the chipset is 
supported.

gentoo also supports ACPI, and while ACPI support in linux is lacking it 
is enough to to fiddle with the CPU throttling, and other nifty ACPI 
features.
