Raymond--
To clear root's mailbox from the command line and preserve the box (all
messages will be deleted that are not sorted into another folder):
cat /dev/null > /var/spool/mail/root

To prevent annoying Cron mail:
* * * * 5 /root/blah/blah > /dev/null &

/dev/null is your friend!
