Have you tried using the plughw option instead of hw? I had a similar problem with my Delta 66 card. As I understand it, my card expects all the audio it receives to be in 32-bit format, and most programs won't send it the audio it wants. By using something like "aplay -D plughw:0" (for card 0) you can tell alsa to do the conversion for you before it gets sent to the card.
