The problem is mii-tool isn't maintained anymore, and will give you 
invalid output for some cards. For example, an e1000 nic hooked up to a 
gigabit switch:

# mii-tool
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok

buzzword:~# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
<...>
         Speed: 1000Mb/s
         Duplex: Full

mii-tool doesn't know it's actually a gig-e link.
