You may want to look at
http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz. There are a lot
of adapters listed, along with the chipset they use. The Seattle
Wireless site has a bunch of information as well.
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Wireless.html is
a good resource as well.

I used to have a netgear ma111 802.11b usb key that worked quite well.
