The above initstring has exactly one purpose: it tells the modem chipset
to use A-Law not u-Law. Obviously the Max intercepts the DTMF tones as
generated by the modem chips in order to get the number they are dialing,
and intercepting them requires the correct law else interpretation fails.
This is why the string exists. This is not directly a bug - I assume it
is hard to make the modem chips default settings dependent on the switch
type or (as in 6.0b) on the Law-setting in case of the immed modem feature.
Then again, maybe not. Would at least help when E1 units would ship with
A-Law as default, wouldn't it ?

BTW, is "MaxDial not inst" of any significance ? It seems maxdial uses
the immed modem feature and doesn't care about some option ?
