It USUALLY means Subscriber Line Carrier, but beside that....

SLC is a Bell ^H^H^H ATT ^H^H^H Lucent trademark/registered SM or
some such BS. NorTel calls theirs different things. I've heard RLU
and other terms.

Some SLC's are directly connected, using "TR-303" I think it is.
This is also called Universal. They are GREAT. But most of the
time, the RBOC's, for reasons I do not claim to grasp, do not
do that.  They instead put a SECOND SLC rack in the CO *and
bridge the last foot to the CO switch with copper*. Stupid, eh?
THAT is where you get the multiple, 56K-killing, D/A conversions.

One ISP in Maine kicked up a BIG fuss and NoNuts converted their SLC
into Universal; all their problems went away. Try a www search to
find the page.
