(ASCEND) New TA

   ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 1997--Ascend
Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND) today introduced the Pipeline 15,
a feature-rich terminal adapter that provides high-speed dial access
to a corporate headquarters, an Intranet or the Internet. With the
addition of the Pipeline 15, Ascend's family of Pipeline products now
serves virtually all ISDN users from individual users and home office
workers to Internet Service Providers and corporations.
"Ascend's latest addition to the award-winning Pipeline family is
sure to capture the attention of individual users interested in
instantaneous, high-speed digital network connections," said Bert
Forbes, Ascend's Pipeline product manager. "No other external
terminal adapter on the market has the wealth of features or is as
effortless to set up and use as the Pipeline 15."
The Pipeline 15 comes with a powerful graphical user interface,
which enables users to install and configure their unit in under 10
minutes. Once connected, the Pipeline 15 supports such advanced
functionality as DBA(TM) (Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation), or MP+.
This integrated protocol distinguishes the Pipeline 15 from the
competition by automatically and transparently adding and subtracting
bandwidth based on demand.
As network traffic across the wide area network increases, DBA
will add a "B" channel to provide more bandwidth. As throughput
decreases, the Pipeline 15 will automatically hang up by means of an
idle timer. By disconnecting an unemployed B channel, the idle timer
will save users money on per-minute charges.
In addition to digital connections, the Pipeline 15 has two POTS
(Plain Old Telephone Service) ports, which provide users with analog
phone and fax services over the same ISDN BRI (Basic Rate Interface)
line that connects to the Internet. This frees users from
maintaining separate analog and digital lines.
"By combining the analog service with the ISDN line, users can
achieve superior performance and consolidated billing," Forbes said.
"By taking advantage of existing resources, the Pipeline 15 provides
the highest degree of functionality at one of the lowest price-points
on the market. These features make the Pipeline 15 the most
attractive alternative available for using ISDN on an external
terminal adapter."

Other advanced features of the Pipeline 15 include the following:

-- True Caller Line ID, as well as other analog telephone
features such as hold, drop, conference capability and call transfer
-- Connection to PCs, Macintoshes, and UNIX workstations via
RS-232 serial cable
-- Support for 16550 UART (Universal Asynchronous
Receiver/Transmitter)
-- Bundled software, including Ascend's MAXLink Pro client
software, MS Internet Explorer and a 30-day free trial of MSN
   -- Flash EEPROM memory
-- Easy installation with the Java-based Pipeline Configurator,
which allows users to configure any Pipeline product over their local
Ethernet segment
-- Support for WAN protocols, including PPP, Multilink PPP, MP+
and BACP, to ensure network interoperability

Price and Availability

The Pipeline 15 may be ordered immediately, and is available in
two configurations, BRI S/T or BRI U Interface, for a U.S. list
price of $450.

Pipeline Family

Other members of the Pipeline family include the Pipeline 25-Fx,
an Ethernet-to-ISDN bridge that supports four users; Pipeline 25-Px,
an Ethernet-to-ISDN Internet Protocol router with Network Address
Translation (NAT); Pipeline 50, a full-featured multiprotocol router
that connects to a central site over an ISDN BRI line; Pipeline 75, a
multiprotocol router that includes two POTS ports; and Pipeline 130,
an integrated router that supports up to a full T1 with ISDN BRI
backup and overflow.
