(ASCEND) Proctive dial-in monitoring

We have nearly 20 Maxes deployed all over the globe for RAS, ISDN and
video conferencing. One of our directors is proposing that we deploy
a system for assuring availability on the dial-in side of things. He
envisions a box which dials each Max hourly and sends a page (or smoke
signal or whatever) in the event that a PPP session is unable to be
     established.

Naturally I recoil at this kind of suggestion. But I was wondering
what kinds of management techniques Ascend admins are using to assure
dial-up availability. That is..other than waiting for the dreaded
nasty phone call from the executive in Hong Kong who can't retrieve
     his e-mail.

     Thoughts? Suggestions? Real Life Experiences?

     Thanks.

     Michael
