Is this do to the impossibility of upgrading through 5.1Ap1 without
destroying the configuration, or simply out of due caution?

Today, I attempted to upgrade a Pipeline 50 with revision 5.0B to
5.1Ap2.
The router lost its config.  After a re-configuration, however, it
worked
perfectly.
