If it's what I suspect, then it's found in:

/ethernet/mod config/Modem Ringback =

That is a "tone" - let's stop using the same term for both tones ;) - that
fakes out some modems into believing the MAX is returning ring-back tone
inband, which those same modems seemed to *need* to heard before the
negotiation
started. Turning this off will get rid of THAT tone.

Then there is the V.8bis tone which is part of the K56Flex modem negotiation.
This tone is slightly less than a second long, followed by a short pause -
then
V.34 modem negotiation starts. This *IS* part of K56Flex requirements.

As I said, I *SUSPECT* you were referring to the modem ring-back tone, which
has always been there (within living memory). I was also mentioning the new
V.8bis tone which sounds reasonably similar - and has been called a "burp"
tone here in the past - I think it was being trademarked ;) - which is part
of the K56 spec.....

Repeating myself already....we are most likely talking about two different
things here. If modem ring-back is enabled, you WILL hear an initial tone
that sounds a little like a short busy-tone (as someone else has called it),
*then* after a short pause there will be the "burp" tone [v.8bis tone], then
the V.34 modem tones.....HONESTLY!

Maybe modem ringback = no ?
