Exactly my point - that's why I put it the way I did...

The tone that I suspect you are referring to is
the modem ring-back tone, which can still be enabled/disabled. I assumed
you were referring to the same "burp" tone that has been discussed here
in the recent past. That one is the initial V.8bis tone when the server
modem initiates the negotiation.

The "burp" tone that _had_ been discussed here was the initial V.8bis tone
that
*IS* required by the K56Flex spec. Both Rockwell *and* Lucent servers will
generate the same tone.
