(ASCEND) Windows 98 dial-in to Ascend Max200+

One of the people in our department just bought a Win98-based Sony
VAIO subnotebook. We need to get her hooked up with remote access on
our own modem server, an Ascend Max 200+, running firmware 6.0.2.
Since all the other people in our department with portables have
Apple Powerbooks, I don't have any experience at setting up
Win95/98's remote access.

Dialing in, we get a proper modem connection and the Max shows the
user is connected. But no IP services are available. The Windows
Connection Status window says that packets get sent from the notebook
to the server, but the server never sends responses back.

The exact same dial-in configuration works with a PowerBook 2400
running OS 8.1 and ARA 3.0.

I've tried setting Win98 to get its IP address from the server, and
I've tried hard-wiring the IP address. Neither one worked.

Is there a "checklist" for setting up remote access in this
situation? Is there an Ascend setting that would affect Windows one
way and Mac another way?

Thank you in advance for any advice.
