(ASCEND) Max40?? & Bay ARN's

Interesting problem has been hanging around here for a few months..

We have a frame link with a Bay ARN at each end.

the far end bay one of our borders whilst the close end links to bay
switch.

one the switch hangs several max's and some ascend p50's plus a few
machines and a link to another switch.

for several months we have been noticing the pings on our frame link
rising yet the traffic flow was dropping (most annoying in peak
times).

Generally a router reboot of the close end Bay router would fix the
problem.

Finally we traced the problem down to our internal routing which is
running RIP-v.2

Now nothing has basically changed in the past year or so except when
we updated to v6.?.? software in our Max's

Boils down to the fact for some reason I had turned on multicast for
rip.

So can anyone explain why this should have happenned ??

One other question...

How many rip-v.2 route table entries can a p50 hold ?? (2000 seems to
break things :-(
