Re: (ASCEND) Max 4000 reset to default settings?

The serial ports are identical, and clearly take the same
cable. The mere fact that you see a non-garbled "Press
Any Key" means that you are OK from a serial cable point
        of view.

My keyboard HAS no "ANY" key. :)
Have you tried pressing multiple keys, including "Enter"?
Have you tried re-booting several times?
Did the machine really pass POST with no errors? Scroll
back your terminal emulator screen to see.

Also, Are you sure that the Max is configured for 9600bps?
You may want to change the baud rate of your terminal
emulator to other settings, just to make sure that you
are not in a situation where POST runs and spits out
messages at some "default" baud rate, and then after
POST, the baud rate changes to whatever settings have
been loaded in the config (however, this is pure
speculation, not based upon any actual experience of
this sort with a Max, but instead based upon similar
        scenarios with other equipment).

What happens if you start at 1200bps, and try hit "enter"
several times at each baud rate supported by your terminal
emulator in turn? If you see garbage characters, you are
        likely "getting warm".

Why not burn up a (new) unique IP on the new machine, and
put up with the automatic creation of a new radius subdirectory
and detail file? This, to my knowledge would be the only "problem"
resulting from adding a new, nearly identically configured Max
to an existing pop. Just change the IP address in the "new"
Max, and (of course) pay attention to subnet masks and such.

>> Anyone have any ideas? Do I need a different cable?

No. You may need some tech support if multiple
reboots can't get you beyond POST.

Factory configuration is a little useless. One could
configure a "private ethernet" on a single machine
for the sole purpose of attempting ethernet-based
        communications.

Yes, there IS an educational channel. One simply presses "OFF".
