Our perception (and Ascend agrees with us to some extent here) that ....
diagram time :-)

+------+
| 1800 | -------- 6 or so ISDN links
+------+
   |
   |
 *---------------------------------------------*
            | |
         +------+ +-------+
         | Unix | | T.Serv|
         |router| | |
         +------+ +-------+
         / | \
    to 5 other segments

Ok - t.serv had default of the Unix router - for management purposes, this was
done. They were however on the same segment.

Now, what we saw was that packets were going to the unix router from t.serv,
then onto the 1800 - the 1800 was saying (by arp/mac resolution), hang on, its
quicker to go direct. So in effect data was redirecting but not being learnt by
the T.serv to send back direct - with me ? Hard to explain via email.

By turning on RIP which was learning the routes better, data was flowing
better.
Mind you , just looking at the unit now, its gone back to bad again. comes and
goes really.

I think all the ICMP re-directs were causing the max or are causing the max to
be unhappy and slogs its ethernet port.

We're replacing the ethernet card just in case.

Does this help ?

Adam
