(ASCEND) 4048 and T1

I'm going to be adding a remote POP to my network via T1.  I have four
4048s in my existing location.  I'll be adding another 4048 at the remote
location. 

My immediate thoughts were to get a CSU/DSU for each location, a cisco
2501 or pipeline 130 at each location and the new 4048 at the remote
location.  I am familiar with this configuration and confident that there
will be no problems. 

My question is, can I eliminate the routers and connect two of the 4048s? 
via the T1?  Will routing be easy enough using this technique or will it
be worth my while (and the cost) to get the separate routers?  Any special
considerations?
