After several intense sessions of banging my head against the wall, I've 
written a patch for the ascend radiusd.dbm to make it use gdbm. This 
seems to prevent an alarming rate of login failures due to dbm exclusive 
locks being placed on the users file (logged as 'Missing radius users file').

We've now been running this live for several weeks with no obvious 
problems, and a slight improvement in speed.
