(ASCEND) Pausing data/fax problems - fixed!

Some months ago, I reported "pausing" problems in data and fax calls
passing through a Max 4004 (PRI<->T1) to a Nortel Meridian PBX. Af-
ter months of scratching heads and poring over docs, Ascend's Kevin
Smith (ta da!) pointed us in the right direction.

As it happened, our PBX was set on 'freestanding' time; it did not
sync clock with any of its inputs/outputs. As the clock slipped on
the PBX, it would buffer (while it waited for the other equipment
to catch up) or dump (while it tried to catch up) data. It did
this on a periodic basis, as I found when I used ping(1) to test
response of dialed-in clients. This interruption was not enough
to disturb voice calls, but it wreaked havoc on data/fax calls tra-
versing the PBX.

The fix was devastatingly simple; we just told the PBX to clock from
the Ascend, and all was well. The sad thing was that the telco should
have checked this on installation (the telco informed us that they
wouldn't support any PRI devices other than the Ascend), and it took
almost a year to solve this.

I'm pleased that the problem was fixed, but I'm distressed by the
time required. During the course of this problem (over months), I
worked with several engineers from both Ascend and GTE, and I don't
think the problem would be resolved now if Kevin hadn't commented
upon my posting to this list.

So, bigtime kudos to Kevin - and I can actually move on to other
things, like splitting BRIs off our Max.

Morals of the story:
	- If it affects data/fax but not voice, check clocking.
	- Make sure that you understand your telco's work.
	- Don't take your telco's work for granted.
	- Be sure to advertise your stickiest problems to this list.
	- Send Kevin corporate goodie bags when he solves your problem. 8)
