(ASCEND) Need to Clear out the password on a 4048

Has anyone had success in clearing out an unknown password on a Max 4048?

We have a couple of boxes that we need to clear the password out of.

Upon emailing support, I was given the directions below.  The problem is
that I have tried this on 3 different boxes & neither will perform as per
the docs.

I have jumpered P-3 and booted it.  Using Minicom at:

57600 8-N-1
Local echo on

I Get to the ==> hit enter and nothing, just a line return.  no prompt, no
message, no activity.  I've tried multiple configurations and attempts.
Half the time, I don't even get the ==>  I have tried just doing 'ef' at
the prompt, but still nothing.

I called into support & explained what was going on.  They stated that I
should get a progress indicator upon erasing the flash.  I don't.  They
suggested that the box was dead.  I don't think that's the case as it is
happening on 3 different ones.

Has anyone been in this situation & found a solution?  Thanks in
advance...

This is what I got from support:

The process for defaulting the Max 4000 is the following.

1. With the Max powered off remove the screws from the case and pry 
   up the black housing.

2.) On the motherboard about 2 inches behind the control port is pin P-3.
    Short/jumpber this pin and power the Max up-(In terminal emulation
    on your computer specify the data rate to be at be at 57.6K. In 
    Procomm Plus this is indicated by pressing alt+P and changing the data
    rate to 56K, in microsoft hyperterm this is specified under File,
    Properties, Configure, Bits Per Second = 57600)

    Now power up the max

   you will see the following prompt

At this point to erase flash "Nvram", hit enter, then type "ef", hit
enter, 

To download flash type "df" this will start the "ckckckckck"

3.) Download your file to the Max using Xmodem on your terminal program.
    (if using Procomm plus hit the page up key, if using microsoft 
     hyperterm then goto transfer, send file, specify the name of the
     binary image in the filename box, for protocol specify 1K X modem).

You will need a smaller software image to upgrade the box meaning that
it will have to be something from the 5.0.x revs. Then after that you
can upgrade via tftp to 6.x.x or 7.x.x. To complete step 3 though
please read below.
