(ASCEND) DSL Max 20 interoperable with Netopia?

Has anyone tried using Netopia R7100 (Copper Mountain-based) SDSL 
routers with a DSL Max 20? Any luck? Care to share your secrets?

I've tried every setting and combination of settings I can think of 
and Ascend says it should work, but it just won't train up.
