Yes, that true. look archetype lightningwall_t which can be used with 
triggers. You really need only one archetype for different wall type
and could set direction with the crossedit. The animation handles
the correct face. The reason why those were left in game was the backward
compability and it is easier for mapmakers (atleast a little bit ;).
It's still a good idea to reduce unneedeed acrhetypes.

One place where I have used modified firewall is /th/island map,
where volcano 'casts' firewalls :). If someone wants to look at it,
entrance is in Sodoma called something like 'New Isle Voyage'.
BTW. return map should be '/sodoma/sodoma' instead of '../sodoma'
