Alex, one source of your problem with random images all over the
screen is this:  if your system administration installed
the crossfire font in /usr/X11/misc/font or someplace like that,
that font is what crossfire will use.  If the font doesn't
match what the new version of crossfire wants you get garbage.

Check to see if you are using the correct font, use
the xset command (man it...)
