I'm almost sure that everything has been proposed earlier :)

The proposed idea was very similar that I had in my mind.  In earlier
post I didn't specify how players learn those skills, since I don't 
think it makes a big difference.  My main point was that player can
specify what skills he wants to learn (instead of a skill group).  
The players race and class would affect how hard it's learn each of 
available skill.  The learning could have happen in guilds, reading
the books or just typing 'practice steal'  and it would require enough 
experience.  For example: every time you advance level you could learn 
some skills.  In addition to this, there could be some amount what could 
be learned just using the skill.  E.g. If a thief uses active lock picking 
skill, he could learn it some amount, but needs more experience.  Or
players could even teach each others some skills.  Also any player
should not able learn all skills available him.
