Re: More on classes/skills/races/etc. (long)

I personally like skills more than classes. I think that the
average person goes through 4 to 5 careers, and several people retrain or
go to college twice. How about this: there are 4-5 (you could have more)
basic "skill colleges", i. e. Fighter, Magic-User, Cleric, Theif. Each of
these have a set of associated skills, such as weapons fighting or spell
casting. A player gets to pick what "college" his character just
graduated from on creation. You start with all the skills in your
college, and can advance them relatively easily. You can also go to
"Guild Halls" or something, and learn other skills from other "Colleges",
but you advance in these skills much more slowly (you just don't have the
background...). If you want to, you can train at another college/guild,
but this is expensive, time consuming, boring, and doesn't always work.
If you do gain 2 or more colleges, you have many more skills, but you
advance slower than the "purists" (brain overload). You could even have
advancement modifiers based on characteristics. How does this sound?
Comments?

BTW, if the non-graphical guts of crossfire are easy to program, could
someone make a short guide showing where the separation is, so that those
of us with many other projects can still make some contributions?
