CF: melting icecubes

What's the safest way to melt icecubes (i.e., without burning up
frozen scrolls and such)?  My current assumption is to use a burning
hands spell.  It might be nice if there were a "thaw" spell, though I
can see that messing up the game balance (on the theory that freezing
items in ice is a penalty to discourage abuse of ice-based spells).

Thoughts or strategies?
