 I think the idea of layer is based on the floor.

 You have the floor layer (top object that has is_floor set), the below floor
layer (anything below that) and the above floor level.

 The problem is what do you do when you have 2 objects above the floor?  Do you
try to do more layers, or just do some stacking?

 But to follow up on this idea, perhaps ability to more or less specific what
you want to see on the map.  For example, maybe some option which you set in
which the only thing shown on the map is the connected objects (makes it easier
to figure that everything is connected right).  Another options to perhaps show
all special (no magic spaces, traps, etc.)
