Talking about "playable" --- IMHO crossfire is quite playable already,
although a lot of "details" are missing. There are a couple of areas
that need some thooght:
a) player commands
It is quite difficult to make good bindings, since you cannot distinguish
objects with the same name (hence the 'alias command...). Also,
'apply works as toggle, which is not very useful for keybindings, too
(one of the things on my ToDo list --- adding options to 'apply).
Of course, a great command would be 'rotate foobar' to rotate all
items named foobar in your inventory. But this would almost be a
cheat command...
A script language would be great... but that's probably asking for
too much right now.
Another thing that I want to do is to automatically apply a talisman/
holy symbol even if you have the skill.
b) game
rotting corpses, partly eaten food, icecubes melting automatically,
more useful alchemy (it's pretty useless --- getting the proper
ingredients to make things is more expensive than buying the potion.
Also, IIRC you can't even make a potion of shock immunity --- which
is the only potion that people would want to make, since it
is very useful and extrelemely hard to find). Also, polymorphing
seems to be useless, as well as pets.
Also, the good old "Your spell failed." endless loop should be fixed
before the 1.0 release -:)
Also, I think destruction should set off the traps in their original
location, so they have a chance of damaging things. Right now you just
stand in a "safe" place, destruct, and have all traps go off on
your place.
c) maps
Pupland is great, but it needs a few minor changes. For example,
I think it is _far_ too difficult to get the information about
Siegfried's house out of Siegfried (I used the editor to figure
that out!). I haven't found Eureca yet, and currently I have no
idea what to do, but I'm not yet willing to play the editor cheat
again, so I don't know whether it's just me or whether it is really
extremely difficult. (I have no idea how to play the new raffle3
either...).
The standard cf maps are pretty much okay (except that in most places
there are annoying monsters damaging the treasure -:)) --- you can
use the classic cf maps to get exp, and the pupland maps to puzzle.
d) gods
IMHO the gods are pretty much unbalanced. Jehova and Mostrai are the only
useful gods --- Jehova as an extremely powerful god; Mostrai is for
highlevel characters who don't really care about their god.
e) character classes
similiar for character classes. Crossfire is biased towards fighters,
so the best class to play is the barbarian. Spellcasting is almost
useless for highlevel characters, and wizards/mages have problems getting
their str/dex/con to 30. Barbarians have problems getting their pow/int
to 30, but these are pretty much useless anyway, so I don't care.
Wis is important --- I wish I could have wis 30 without using my
axe of B1FF. Some classes are pretty much useless --- fireborn
(no armor, no weapon), monk (no weapon), and probably others.
Just a few quick thoughts,
Christian
