 I don't think Xpm is required, but haven't checked (if you comment out the
lines in config/crosssite.def, what happens)?

 The xpm sourcecode can be gotten from ftp.x.org (or any mirrors) -
/contrib/libraries/xpm-3.4k.tar.gz
