The axe of B1FF is an excellent general weapon (since it is the only
good weapon that can be enchanted).

Dragonbane is good against dragons, and works very well as a general
weapon, too (less damage than the axe, but it has the speed +),

Demonslayer is good against demons, and an excellent weapon to start
with (since the dragonbane is no longer available for lowlevel
characters).

Lava slasher is good if you still lack mithril chainmail of winter and
white dragon scale mail, but other than that it is not a particulary
useful weapon.

Anything else is, indeed, rubbish (although you'll have to use a
<foo>sword +2/3/4 until you can get a weapon).
Of course this is just as a "long term" weapon; some of the random
artifacts are quite good for lowlevel characters, and the katana of
masamune is an interesting weapon, too.
