Re: CF: experience point system
The exp points needed to gain a level is awfully easy to adjust. If
someone modifies the table/formula and presents a good case that the
adjusted table makes CF a better game then at the very least it could
be a compile time option. There is no history, nor any great reason,
of preserving backwards compatibility of new features with old
characters. The presumption is that old chars benefited from a lesser
game and a most players would want to retire them in order to play
new chars under the latest rules which require greater player skill.
Or an energetic CF admin would edit existing chars to adjust for
CF changes.
As for the Cf client, the client is the only way that makes sense
going forward. Unfortunately, that probably means there will be
client issues which were not direct X11 issues. As there are very
limited development resources, it is simply not worth the effort for
interim releases to maintain X11 as well as client support. There will
be periods where things are not as wonderful due to internal issues
being cleaned up, but building a wonderful world first requires a solid
foundation. CF's foundation needs to be reinforced and cleansed before
trying to build any of the wonderful possibilities we all see.
Regarding the development resources and the general lack thereof, I
have great hopes of being a couple weeks away from finally having the
time to work on the client. Thus, freeing Mark to concentrate on the
CF server. Maybe in 1999 we will have something that kicks butt (or
kicks even more butt for those that are already CF fans).
Lastly, at some point CF server probably needs to take advantage of
multiprocessing and allow using threads. This too will have a period of
things breaking, but ultimately will allow for mega servers with lots of
simultaneous players.
