CF: running crossfire

Hi.  I'm pretty new to running crossfire, but I've played the game before.
I jsut compiled cf for my machine, and I'm wondering how to run it... I've
tried the -display and -server and crossfire responds with an invalid
option message. The only thing that seems to get a daemon-like thing going
is the -detatch option, which then when I try to to telnet to port 13326,
no connection.  Whats the deal?
